Title: Informative Safety Certificates for Autonomous Robot Motion Design

Abstract: Robots are becoming an integral part of our everyday life in assisting people with many diverse tasks. Safety is essential for achieving truly dependable and reliable robots that interact with people and other robots in a shared environment. The way a robot determines its motion risk and encodes collisions plays a key role in autonomous robot motion design. In this talk, I will discuss about what makes a safety certificate informative and effective for robot motion planning and control by giving specific examples. First, I will argue that a safety certificate should inform a robot about its surroundings effectively by providing more than what distance to collision is. Second, a safety certificate should be strongly and accurately aligned with expected robot motion with minimal conservatism. Third, a safety certificate should offer a systematic tradeoff between accuracy and computational efficiency via refinement, decomposition, and approximation.

Biography: Ömür Arslan is an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical and systems engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA, in 2016 and the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical and electronics engineering from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, in 2007 and from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey, in 2009, respectively. His current research focuses on the algorithmic foundations of robotics and aims at systematically integrating perception, control, planning, and learning to achieve safe robot autonomy in dynamic environments. His research interests include robotics, motion planning, multirobot systems, sensor networks, machine learning and machine perception.
