Robotics Science is evolving from an exotic technology operating in fenced-off areas of factories towards a key technology that is expected to create transformative change in all industries and markets around the world. Developments in the field of robotics initially conceived in universities are being commercialized and transferred into industrial applications at a dizzying speed. Serious changes we observe in everyday life, all based fundamentally on robotics technologies, include but are not limited to autonomous vehicles in the automotive sector, warehouse carriers int the logistics sector, robot arms that can safely work side by side with humans in the manufacturing sector and unmanned systems in the defence sector.

ROMER - Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Technologies Application and Research Center is its early development stage. It brings researchers from different disciplines together in a common working space and encourages them to work in interdisciplinary collaborative groups; providing them with prototyping workshops and experimental space required for rapid development. It is a center that provides the knowledge and human resources as well as the technical and physical infrastructure required for both research and industrial prototyping and technology demonstration projects. The infrastructure is supplemented by indoor and outdoor arenas equipped for scientific experimentation.


The vision of the center is

• To raise a new generation of researchers who have the ability to improve the field

by developing pioneering robotics technologies,

• To influence and advance robotics research both at a national and international level,

• To integrate robotic technologies into a variety of industrial applications and to

help the development of products that will use these technologies,

• To actively participate and guide the development of unmanned and smart systems in

line with the developing needs of the country.


ROMER operates in three broad areas towards this Vision:

Research: At the international level, ROMER strives to become a world renowned research

and development center on robotics and research and supports national academic and research institutions as well as tech companies to access and participate in international networks and projects. At the national level, it provides organizations with robotic technology roadmaps and gives them policy development support. It initiates and supports academic and industrial clusters and provides physical and technical infrastructure support to universities, companies and institutions in need of such infrastructure.

Industry: ROMER provides support to the Defense Industry for the development of unmanned and intelligent defense systems, and the Manufacturing Industry for the critical robotic technologies required for the integration of next generation robot technologies into production processes. The center provides rapid prototyping services to these industries with its excellent know-how, technical and physical infrastructure and also supports SMEs who want to operate in the field of robotic technologies.

Education: ROMER develops an integrated graduate program in robotics at METU to train excellent researchers in robotics. It conducts education and research activities that will boost interest into the field at the undergraduate level as well as supporting STEM activities in robotics by organizing robotics summer schools. The center aims to increase the prevalence and quality of robotics research in our country with an improved impact both at a national and international level. In order to further support education in the field, the center tries to increase the awareness of the industry about highly educated personnel through R&D policy help and research roadmaps. It also provides infrastructure (physical and technical) support for other universities as well as support them access international networks and academic partners.
