How to Join Undergraduate Research Projects
At ROMER, undergraduate students can participate in ongoing research through Undergraduate project announcements in open positions. To ensure meaningful contributions, students must prepare before applying. This page explains the steps you need to follow.
Step 1: Explore Projects
Visit the open positions and review available projects. Each Undergraduate project includes:
- A short description
- Required skills
- Suggested tutorials
- A task to complete before applying
Step 2: Complete Tutorials
Projects list the skills and knowledge you need. Check the Tutorials Page and study the relevant topics (Ubuntu, ROS2, Arduino, Gazebo, etc.) until you feel confident.
Step 3: Perform the Task
Each project requires a small preparatory task (for example: writing a ROS2 node, running a simulation, or controlling a motor). Complete this task and prepare a short report (1–2 pages) with:
- A brief report and videos of your results
- Short explanation of what you did
- Code snippets if relevant
Applications without a completed task report will not be considered.
Step 4: Apply
When you are ready, prepare the following documents:
- CV (max 2 pages)
- Statement of Interest (1 page: why you want to join, which project excites you)
- Task Report (proof of completed pre-application task)
Send all documents in a single email to romer@metu.edu.tr with the subject line: Application – Undergraduate Research Project.
Step 5: Interview / Orientation
Shortlisted students may be invited to a brief interview or orientation meeting. During this session, we will discuss your skills, interests, and how you can contribute to the project.
Summary
- Check projects → find one that matches your interests
- Follow tutorials → learn required skills
- Complete the project-specific task → prepare a report
- Apply with CV, statement, and task result
- Attend interview/orientation if selected
This process ensures that only motivated students who are willing to learn and put effort can join ROMER’s research activities. We look forward to seeing your applications!
